I've added a new Mobile Services section on the Links page to list various services of use to mobile users. I've started the section by moving some of the service-related items from the Mobile Sites section. The difference is that Mobile Sites are intended to be destinations in themselves (or lists of destinations) formatted for mobile devices, while Mobile Services help you with some task while you're mobile, but aren't necessarily sites you'd visit on your device.

Banner Ads Debut

This site isn't about making money, but to help offset the cost of running it, I've decided to accept limited advertising. Right now, that consists of one banner ad on most of our main pages.

They will not show up on handheld devices or if you print a page. If you donate to the site, you'll also get the ability to turn ads off if you want.

I've made some updates to improve handheld and keyboard support, including the following:

• Links are now highlighted better when you tab to them (or hover over them).

• You can now change the basic font size on a handheld device. This allows you to make the font bigger if you can't read things or smaller if you want to scroll less. Visit the Preferences page to change the font.

Both of these changes require your browser to support CSS, and changing the font size requires you to have JavaScript on.

• Reviews now show when they were first posted and when they had significant updates made.

• Reviews have a Table of Contents list of links at the top to more easily get to specific parts of the reviews.

• I updated some of the reviews to indicate version, price or availability changes.

• I've finished updating the reviews to be valid XHTML 1.0 (Transitional).

Site Update

June 11, 2007

I've made several updates to the site, some visible, some organizational. The visible changes include the following:

• I've added a News page. Currently it only has a news feed, but check it out.

• I've added an About page. This describes the purpose of the site and answers some questions about it. It also links to other site-related pages.

• I've updated the navigation tables to make them smaller. Most of the removed links can still be found on the About page.

• The Store page hasn't worked in a while, so I've removed it.

• I've updated the forms used on the site to highlight the field that has focus. This makes it easier to see where the text input cursor is. This affects the Contact page, the Preferences page and the Search page.

• I've updated the main pages to be valid XHTML 1.0 (Transitional). The changes themselves may not be visible, but pages that have been validated will display the following badge near the bottom:

I've changed the look of the site. I've resized the navigation areas at the top and bottom of each page to better fit on a Pocket PC display.

Also, the poll I conducted on the new color scheme was about 67% for the old scheme and 33% for the new one. As I prefer the new one myself, but don't want to upset people who liked the old scheme, I've made it configurable. To do that, I've created a new Preferences page. On that page, you can select one of three color schemes:

• Classic — the original scheme with black text on a gray graphic background
• Cool — the scheme I was testing with yellow text on a black graphic background
• Clean — a new scheme with black text on a plain white background for people who wanted more contrast

I hope this makes everybody happy.

I've added better handheld support to the site. (No, this isn't an April Fools joke.)

If you're viewing this on a Pocket PC browser that supports Cascading Style Sheets, you'll see more on a page because a smaller font size is used and some page sections aren't shown. Pocket Internet Explorer on Pocket PCs running Windows Mobile 2003 supports CSS; the version in Pocket PC 2000 and 2002 doesn't support CSS.

You should turn the Fit to Screen option on in Pocket Internet Explorer regardless. If you do that, you shouldn't have to scroll horizontally except to access the last items on the right side of the navigation bar.

I've also changed the last updated date to use the month name to avoid any confusion for readers who don't use the mm/dd/yyyy format in their country.

I've also created a separate Review page organized by category and rewrote the Privacy Policy page to include other legal crap, like copyright information and details on how to link to this site.

I've removed the skyscraper ad banners on the right side of various pages. This is because Google's AdSense notified me that running this site on a subdomain of my ISP violated their terms and conditions — even though the site ran exactly the same way when they accepted me into their ad program. Why did it take them almost three months to complain? Their "specialists" wouldn't address that.

If I can get permission from my ISP to serve ads, I'll put them back. Until then, I think Google AdSense sucks — I served ads for their clients, and now they complain.

I bought the svpocketpc.com domain. As my first act, I have put the Silicon Valley Video Group Pocket PC Web page on that domain at http://www.svpocketpc.com. This will be a new Web site called Silicon Valley Pocket PC. In the upcoming months, I hope to add more features beyond my Windows CE history and my links section.
